THE TURF
, . TO-DAY'S RACES AT WAIKAK-APA. ' Patronß - who intend boing present at Tuuherenikau to-day and on Monday ■should note that special trains will leave LamUton btation at G.ib a.m. and 8.30 a.m.. and will return after the last race. The day's card will commence with the Maiden Hack Handicap, which starts at 11.30 a.m. They are a poor lot in the raco, and the favourite may be Mannish, who was rcccntly acquired by Mr. E. Kiddiford. Mannish hi;s not earned a name for reliability in the pabt, but ho may do better to-day. The next best in the race is Gold Pan, a place-getter at Dannovirke, who showed a lot of pace behind Sling Camp and Lallah Rook. Astinome may be at the shortest price on tho Railway Handicap, for she lins been most consistent in her raced of late. Torfreda, showed a glimpse of her form at Maßterton. and may be the most difficult for the favourite to dispose of.. In the Hack Welter Handicap, seven furlongs, War Baby and Miss Maid arc recent winners, but the actual favourite may bo Paonui, who waa unlucky not to win a race at Hulls. For the big handicap Imaribbon will be missing, as she ha 3 been sent to Feilding to raco on Monday, Battle Array, who has been galloping well on the trucks, will have plenty of support, and so will Hyttus and Dainty Step. The latter should improve on her Masterton form, and may go out favourite. The distance of thu Two-Year-Old Stakes, 'five furlongs and a half, will suit the loc-ally-owned Insurrection, who has been i doing great work at Trentham. Kildeo and Canyon should both run well. For the Ferry Hack Handicap Talley TCoso reads well, aB she beat Flying Maotor at Bulls, and was iluishiujt on at the right end of her race. Damien and Timidity will be well backcd amongst tho others. Ermine will most likely be reserved for the Open' Welter Handicap, in which she will have the services of A. Oliver. This may make her first cholcc in the absence of Xjnaribbon and Torfreda. Scornful and Mntatua should both do well. The concluding event may be a match betwecnjPrintempa and March On, both of whom can get eight furlongs fairly well, AT ELLERSLIE.. The big event at the Auckland meeting Is .the Easter Handicap, one mile. The race has drawn an aceptance of fourteen horßeß, and the issue is regarded as very open. The \ Railway Handicap winner 1 Tigritiya, 7st. 121b., ,is nicely placcd in the handicap, and so is Rockfield, Bst„ and 80-Peep. Vst. 61b. The last-named • finished no well on both days at Wanganui, and she should be in the fighting line to-day. The Great Northern Oaks looks like a. i duel between Mat.atane and Rose Queen, but.the latter will be the more seasoned i of the pair, and properly handled, she should have a call on her. opponent at the finish. ' , Not many supporters will be found for tlie opponents of Humbug in the Cham- ! pagno Stakes. The consistent Colmisia, should be seen to advantage in the Onslow Stakes, in which the field, with the exception of ■ Dunedin, consists of a lot of unknown | two-year-olds. '■ Esthonia- has a lot of form to recommend him in the President's Handiiap. , but be may find it difficult to shake off , Punka, who will be well suited by tho ! long straight at Ellerslie. * j
