ATHLETICS

N.Z. UNIVEKSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS. Yesterday saw the arrival in Welling-? ton of the Otago, Canterbury, and Auckland teams for tho N.Z. inter-university tournament to bo held at tho Basin Reserve on Easter Monday. All the teams aro up to their full strength, so that, a very interesting contest is looked forward .to. The local 'varsity athletes at present holds the points shield, and are determined to keep it in Wellington for another year. However, it will be a verv close finish, judging by the personnel of the various visiting teams. The arrangements for the boxing contest in connection with this tournament are well in hand, and with the able assistance of the local association the Town ITall on Easter Monday night should bo tho scene of a number of willini bouts. Included in the Canterbury team is N. I M. Richmond, the New Zealand Rhodes; scholar for 1919, who is reputed to be a verv fine heavy-weight exponent of tho art. The fact that he has to his credit the. winning of the lie,ivy-weight championships of his reinforcement at Trenfliamp Camp, his troopship, and bis Division in Prance, substantiate this reputation. The Otago men hav* in their ranks fjich exponents r.s Evans, Smith, and Church, boxers of no mean ability,- who have often distinguished themselves in prominent contests. . The Auckland representatives and the local talent, in addition to the above, should make for a very successful even- ' iim's entertainment. It is worthy of note that each competitor, besides boxing for the 'New Zealand University Cham-' pionship in his own particular weight, is also competing on behalf of his own' college in a points competition, so that more than the usual interest is -being evinced in tho various bouts.
