DAIRY PRODUCE
/ QUESTION OF CONTROL.
Two davs' ago a cablegram was pub 4 lished in 'which mention was made of the possibility oi' the continuance of the control in Britain of dairy produce, as at present. The cablegram indicated that there was a probability that the Government in England would refuse, to re* raove tilie control from these products, and it was.further stated that the pro- v Bent arrangements were unfair in that the control operated only against Dominion shipments, whereas Irish butter was coming ou.to the market free; _ . The position regarding the future sliip : meiit and sale of New Zealand butter and cheese has not changed for some time. When the question was, first raised Some months ago, the Prime Minister, with the consent of tlm producers representatives, made inquiries from tho British Government as to their wishes in the matter. . In reply, the British Government inquired on what terms, the New Zealand producers ■ would be prepared to sell. Afi the New Zealand producers wish to have a free market, and as the, telegram was not definite in some particulars to admit of a direct answer being' sfiven, Mr. Massey> made further inquiries by cable. No conclusive v reply has yet been- received. The New Zealand Government has , not yet had advice as to -whether the British Government intends to continue tho commandeer or not. Mr. Massev has expressed his. personal opinion that tho control of butter may be continued, bufc that he does not think there will be any control in respect of cheese.
