WINTER MILK SUPPLIES
, ■- • :. WARNING TO CONSUMERS.; ' The revenue of the Coloration Milk Department for the month of February was .49156, the number of gallons treated being 129,263. • The cost peif gallon was Is. Ojd. and the revenue was Is. sd. A debit balance was shown °f ' • .The acting-chairman of the Milk Com-l-mitftje' (Councillor W. H- tennett) pointed out night's meeting of the Uty I Council that'-there had been ft further reduction-.of the debit balance of £iwlThe council sliould not .tlunlv howefer, ■ that tho whole of the debit balance was being gradually eliminated, becauso they were approaching tho time when-an m•juetment would have'to ho paid to tho , fainiers who were supplying butter-fat to the Rahui factory. Although tlio committ;o felt that good progress had been made with tho milk scheme, no was sorry , to pay that'the problem of the milk supply was nothing liko.setHed up to the present. They were faced with increased demands by t'no vendors to meet , the cost of distribution. Under the Act , passed last.year dairies within a radius of 'two miles of tho city were pillowed to supply milk without passing it through the city milk station, provided they did not sell more than 30 gallons, per day. That was another difficulty with which the Milk Committee had to contend. Although it might be all very well for cer- ] tain consumers to obtain milk from these , dairies during the summer months, it was < manifestly unfair to expect the (ity Council to supply them with milk should a s shortago occui' in the winter. It was \ grossly unfair, to exncct tho vendors who f had been working "under, the council s , pclieme to rob their customers in (he winter time in order to supply those people who were unable to obtain milk from tho j small dairies, from whoni they had been , .getting supplies during the slimmer. 'I ( ivould like to givo this warning, added Councillor Bennett; "because I am, afraid that there will bo serious trouble in connec'tion with this matter in? the coming winter." Councillor J. Glover said tho Hospital Board had been informed recently that it could not bo supplied with milk at tho same rate as tlie 'council supplied it to 1 tho vendors.- He thought-it was some- 1 thing like a scandal that one public body 1 could not supply another public body i with milk. ] Councillor P. Fraser wanted to know i who supplied the information to the Hos- 1 pital Board. i Councillor Bennett: The matter has never, come Ijefo're the committee. i The Deputy-Mayor (Councillor G. i Frost) paid that the Town .Clerk had as- I siirod. him that no communication had c gone forward from his office. , i Councillor Glover stated that the in- t formation came from the Milk Depot. i Councillor Frost said a note would be c made of the matter, which would bo in- i vestigr.ted by the Milk (
