IMPERIAL DEFENCE

7 i JOINT GENERAL STAFF ADVOCATED j

BRIDGING GULF BETWEEN j ARMY AND NAVY i

OFFICERS WITH COMMON BODY OF j

DOCTRINE

(By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright

London, March 23.

During the committee stage of the debate on the Army Estimates in the House of Commons, several speakers 6trongly advocated the establishment of a joint Imnerinl General Staff to deal with mattore relating to the defence of the Emnire.

Captain Ormsby-Gore suggested that in view of our liew commitments under the LciU'tie of Nations we ought to have new oreanisations under the War Office for tap purpose, of advising and preparing for the defence of the new territories. Mr. Winston Churchill. Minister of War. pointed out that the Committee of Imperial Defence was a great instrument, bv menns of which the Prime Minister asserted his views mid exercised responsibility over the whole field'of military politics.- Tho Committee of Imperial Defence would certainly endure, but it was a mistake to suppose that «ny committee could bridge the gulf between the services. "If tho gulf is to be bridged between the Armv and the Navv it will only be bv building up, over a' number of Years', a breed or brand of officers trained in a common staff college, where thev can aeanire a common body of doctrine, dealing with the study of war as a whole." The development of such a bodv of officers, ho said, was far more urgent than any question of uniting' the Ministries under one head. He intimated that as far as" the War Office was concerned tiiev would push forward tho idea of a joint staff, with a joint staff colleee. with the utmost energy—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
