SWIMMING CARNIVAL
> A RECORD BROKEN
FINE PERFORMANCE BY HISS WALROND
The Wellington Swimming Centre of tho New Zealand Association held its first carnival since tho commencement of tho war. at the Te Aro Baths, on Saturday afternoon, and the largo gathering of spectators proved that public interest is as keen as ever. Those present' wero treated to a fino performance by Miss Violet Walrond, of Auckland, lioider of tho New Zealand ladies' record for tho 100 .vards, who lowered her time by 2-ssec., thus establishing a new record, and in addition beating the New South Wales record. At the recent Auckland championship meeting Miss Walrond established a New Zealand record for tho distance, which Bhe completed in 712-sbcc. Her graceful stroko and amazing speed oamed for her the admiration of all. She is undoubtedly a brilliant swimmer, and displays promise of lowering still fui> ther her splendid time.
Patterson, holder of tho New Zealand record for 1 100 vards, contested tho 100 yards provincial championship with D. Murrc'.r, and although conditions wero ideal, he did not succeed in lowering his time, which Is 60sec. Murrell was in splendid form, and Bwam well, but tho champion was too good for him. Tho only other entrant in this event was S. Atkinson, but ho did not face tho starter. Patterson won by about an arm's length, hie time being \6O l-sscc.
The 50 yards ladies' handicap event was contested by 12 ladies. The handicapping proved excellent, and the race was very exciting, with a closo finish. Miss Walrond "started seven seconds behind the scratch girl,. Miss Buckmaster, who went at five, and secured third place.
The ladies' diving was a foaturo of tha carnival. Miss K. Bristed, of Ohristchurch, the Now Zealand champion lady diver, was warmly applauded for her exhibition of the art. She secured first place easily.
In tho life-saving competition the exhibition proved conclusively that, the ladies arc Quite as capable of performing this work as the men. The competition comprised a series of tests, and tho Ladies' Royal Life-saving Society entered a team, which captured second place on time.
During the proceedings it was announced that Miss V. Walrond and" Miss G. Shand. of Christchureh. had been recommended to the New Zealand Swimming Association for nomination at the Olym-' pia Snorts. C. OlaridEe, junior champion over tlio distance, easily iccurod first place in the 440 yards handicap. He proved himself a very capable swimmer and appeared quite fresh at the finishing lap. Patterson, who also contested the event, secured second prize, but had nb hope of catcliinE Claridge, who maintained hi 9 lead. Rain fell late in the 6fternoon, and drove a number of the spectators away# but the chief, events had been decided before the weather changed.
