The Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. P: Massey) continues to make good progress after his recent operation. It was reported yesterday that he was getting on very well indeed.
Tho British Trade Commissioner, Mr. P. W. Dalton, who reached Auckland last week after a visit to England extending over a period of nearly eighteen months, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning. Captain E. Baynes, his assistant, has also reached Wellington.
His Honour Mr. Justice leave Chrislchurch for the West Coast to-morrow. On' returning from the const his Honour will proceed to (he North Island for tho Easter vacation.
Mr. N. H. Mackie, district valuer, of Paimerston North, whose services threo years ago were requisitioned by the Fijian- Government, is leaving for Samoa by tha Navua to undertake special work for the new Administration. He expects to be away about three months. Dr J. S. Dockrill, of Dublin, is at present on a visit to the Dominion. Dr. Dockrill served during the war with the Tmnerial Army, and purposes .returning to Ireland next month.
Dr. Mnmiix, Boruan Catholic Arclibiilton of Melbourne, sails for Home via America »er the Ventura on May 19. He will L'ive a detailed report of tho progress of Catholicism in the archdiocese to the Pope, and subsequently will pay an extended visit to Ireland. Tho aged Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dub.in (Dr. Walsh) has been in indifferent health of late, and the name of Dr. Mannix has been unofficially mentioned for the Dublin See. savs an exchange. At Home Dr. Mannix has a warm friend in Archbishop Carretti. the first Papal Delegate to Australia, and,, whether Dr. Mannix remains in Ireland or returns to Australia, there will not be much surprise in iioTin'i Catholic circles if he is honoured willi a cardinal's hat by the Pope.
Mr. Christopher T. Smith, of Blenheim,' was on Friday admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court by nis Honour Mr. Justice Stringer, on the motion of Mr", G. Watson.
Mr. W. Vv. Ridgley, who has been for s»ven years stationmaSter at Mercer, lias Veen transferred to u similar position at Pflhi'ntiM. Previously Mr. Ridgley 'wns stationniaster at Ngaruawahm for six' years, and at Avondale for five years. Prior to his departure for the Wairarapa, lie was tendered a farewell social at Mercer, where he is held in high esteem. Mr. C. P. Hynn, formerly chief clerk at Wondvilie, has succeeded Mr. Ridgley as stationmaster fit Mercer, Tho Rev. A. C. Lawry, of Jhristchurch, has been elected Centenary Secretary of the Methodist Church, to travel New Zealand in 1321. Constable J. Carroll, who has been stationed at Riverton for a number of years, has been promoted- to the rank of sergeant and transferred to Wellington.
