CARNIVAL AT PALMER.STON. (From Our Special Corrncpondent.)
Pajmerston North, March 18. ' The .Manawatu Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association held its' carnival at the municipal baths, Palmerston North, yesterday. There was' a very large attendance of the public, and the various events, were well contested. Particular interest centred in the pre-, seneo of the Walrond family of Auckland swimmers, whose prowess in the water was quite a revelation to roost of those present. Miss Y- Walrond, the New. Zealand lady'champion, swam with thtvm'en in the final of the Manawatu championship, in whicji she .made an endeavour to lower her own record of 71 and 2-ssec. for the 100 yds.. but with the.dead water she was nii.Vblo to approach it nearer than by 4 2-ssec. She, however, put .up a great ;ace, end, 'swimming alongside .Sollitt, tho chnmnion, she finished only a shade behind him. Miss E. Walrond, the. girl champion, .took part-in the ladies' handicap, which was won by her sister, with but two yards between them. Mr. AYalrond pave nn exhibition dive covering over 10ft. The schoolboys' championship (75yds.. for boys under 14 years) was won by Evatt (Campbell Street),, with Nicholls second, and the school girls' championship (50yds., for girls under 14 years)' by Yida, Flcminp (Terrace F/nd), with 0. Laurenson (College'Street^second. The,Manawatu Centre Championship was won by G. Sollitt, with N.' A. Foden second (both' of Palmerston North), in lmin. 13 4-ssec. The ladies' '.andicap .'(M £3rd. yds.) was won by Miss V. Walrond (Auckland), with Miss D. Sanson (Glen Oroua) second in lmin. 15sec. Miss V. Walrond did the distance in 75 4-ssec. Tn the men's. handicap (66 23r'ck), R. Boyce, s?ec. (Glen Oroual was first and Cockroft (scr.) second in 565e3. Tho Tc]oy race was won by High School, with Palmcrston North Club second.
TO-MORR 0 W'S CARNIVAL. In order 1 that the weather conditions shall not interfere with the carnival scheduled for the Te Aro Baths to-mor-dow afternoon, the management committoo of the'carnival is endeavouring to secure tho- J use of the Boys' Institute hatha, which could he used if the weather is too'bad for Te Aro. A definite Toply will be given by the institute authorities this morning. The . institute baths can seat 1000 spectators.
