DISCHARGE OF MEAT

DELETERIOUS EFFECT OF LONG STORAGE.

~. London, March 13. Some comment Ims boon aroused recently in connection with the quieter discharge which it is alleged is secured in London for South American meat. It is now. pointed out that South American liners have brought no chilled meat for some Montlm past. In accordance with Government instructions, the liners have been bringing frozen the same descriptions of beef which ha* 1 , previously been eo'Tie<? chilled.

It is clear, however, that South American meat roaches the markets in the United Kingdom much more quickly than Australasian meat, which is also suffering from the length of time it has been in store/ It is asserted that until the vast slocks of old meat have been disposed of, the good character earnpd before the war by fresh Australian and New Zetland frozen meat will not he fully redeemed. It is further contended that not much progress can be made with the disposal of meat until it is offered at a prico nearer fournence than the present wholesale price of sixpence a pound. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RELIEVING CONGESTED STORES LAMB AND MUTTON PUT ON SALE IN NEW TOM. (Rec. March 18, 5.5 p.m.) New York, March 17. It is understood that the British Government has put on snlo in New York a large quantity of Australian nnd New Zealand lamb and mutton. The prices are respectively IGJ cents and cents ner 11). wholesale, current prices bein? .10 cents and 2t cents. It is indicated that this is being done in order to relieve the congestion of the meat 6tores in Britain, where 60me vessels carrying I Australian meats are unable to unload for three weeks.—Aus.-N.Z.
