STRIKES IN INDIA
CROWD FIRED ON BY SOLDIERS.
Allahabad, Mnrch 17. | For some time industrial disputes have continued in and around Calcutta. Npws lias been received that tho strikers at the Tata works. Jamshednur, after presenting their demands, collected at the works and began sfone throwinor. The crowd was surrounded by< soldiers, who fixed bavorets- and charged. The crowd laid bare their chests, offering to die at once Tather than slowfy bv starvation. Thev demanded tho expulsion of the ■Indian workers from inside the works. The military were then ordered to fire. Sabotage on the railway has been attempted, and tho line is beinrr guarded. The lafosc reports from .Touishcdnur state that the shootiwr caused a panic among the strikers, who are keeping ouiet. The railway li«t> and station are reported to be safe. The aotual casualties were ten killed and twenty-five wounded — Aus;-N.Z. Cable Assn. ■
