Colonel Mitchell, M.P.. lms been spendi ing a few days in the Lower Wairiirapa, and has,interested himself in tho possibilities of tho district as to soldier-settle-ment and general development. St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Masterton were favoured : with perfect weather. A picnic was held on the Sol-way-show grounds; the attendance was large, and a sports programme was oaiv ried out with all succcss and enthusiasm. In the evening the finale took, the form of a. grand concert held in the Opera House, arid witnessed by a record audience. Items wero rendered by locsl talent, and by Miss 'V. Lamacroft. Tho Balmorston North Borough Council, at its last meeting, decided to advance' tho, wages of its workmen to 14s. per day,- .and- to allow an. .extra halfcrown a day to those wlio wero providing teams for the borough work. ■As it is intended to entertain His Boyal Highness the Prince of Wales 011 the local sports around and at the Esplanade during his visit lo Ptilmersfon North, the council has decided to make certain improvements to, these pleasure resorts, including. the repairing of the .stand at Iho snorts ground and flip paint- ; ing -of the band rotunda at the Esplanade.
