NOTES AND COMMENTS
(T3y Gliincok.)
Tlio Dannevirko meeting,. which opens to-day, will be concluded on Monday. In the Maiden Plate two names stand nut prominently, viz., Miss Lovo (A. Oliver) and Hori (11. Gray). The latter hna been disappointing and may not be ready yet, but Alias Love has done' some racing, and with a clean jump out should bo more than able to hold her own. On Napier form, Goldshine appears the best of the Cup field, for at the Park he carried 41b, over v,-eight. The distance " ill 'he too far for Mawha, and Rose Wreath may find the weight troublesome. A very likely one at the minimum would be All Talk, but as he would suffer on the score of horesrmnshin. maybe he will be reserved for ihe Welter, in which he is remarkably well handicapped, and if reserved for ..the racs may go nut n good favourite. The President's Handicap looks like £oing to Miirihiku, who is more forward than the other runners, and should be the best, backed of the runners.
Retard has a very big weight in the Makirikiri Hack Handicap, and he may be unable to concede 201b. to Willys Knight, who always raccs well at Dannevirko. Another likely pair nre. Florist, a winner at Taranaki, and Mannikin. If she has freshened up after her two races at Napier, Early Dawn may lead the field'in the Hack, six furlongs, for she is a very smart maro .when well.
11l the Juvenile Handicap, the two top weights may carry most money, but they will bo well tested to beat Celmisia, who was noticed finishing very fast at Trentham and is- evidently useful.
Well-backed horse-i in the Hack Welter will include Miss Maid, a placegetter at Napier, and Glentomywho has heon working very well on the Awapuni tracks. '
R"val Trish is to fulfil his engagement in the Ohinemuri Cup to-day, an event he won last year.'
Mr. L. C. Hazlett's brood mare Sister Radius, 'by Chnrlemasno IT—St. Regis, was brought back to Dunedin from Syd"ev this week, lieing landed from the Tarawera on Wednesday. S'hs \wns sent across Ho 1 bev mated with the English horso Buckwheat.
The two-year-old Dunedin injured one of hie feet at Inst week-end, and veterinary assistance had to be secured. This mishap is not expected to be serious, and a few days' Test should see him nil right again.
Mr. E. W. Allison, jun., wns a buyer at the recent Victorian yearling sales, securing n gelding hv Land ,of Song from Mnkarini, and a filly by Land of Somr from Smoky. The youngsters will be brought from Australia by the iirst available boat.
• At Riccarton on Thursday Winter Wind and Moorfowl were, companions over six furlongs, which were left beliind in lmin. 20sec. The filly has thickened out nicely since she returned from tho north. Both moved very freely in their tasks.
Sasanof'is not engaged in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes, and with Gloaming off tho scene there does not appear to be any bigli-clasa old horse to dispute tho position with Amythas and the two-year-olds. It is understood that R. J. Mason will make his usual trip to Sydney in the autumn with a few horses, remaining for the spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club, and so avoiding the New Zealand winter.' The rumour that Mason contemplates an early retirement is once more revived. It is thought probable that Mr. W. G. Stead's two-year-old filly Delight will do her Easter racing at . Ricearton, _ and her meeting with Moorfowl and Winter Wind in the Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes should create a lot of interest, Delight created a big sion when she won the Gimcrack Stakes at Rawlwick in tho spring, and her running at tho recent meeting at Napier Park showed that she wns in form. Very satisfactory nominations have been received for' the Easter meeting of the Wairarapa Rnbing Club. rhe_ entries for the principal events arc.Railwav Handicap—Sainarang, Ermine, Torfre'da, Matty, Swanee Riyer Daytime, Cyrisian, Lady General, Miss Land. Tan, Astinome, liawakore, Mntatua. Easter Handicap. Oiio mile and a quarter.— Dainty Step. Railand, Hurry Up, Matty, Davtime, Battle staff, Multaine, Scornful, Goldslune, Penurv Rose, Red Ribbon, Potentiality, Esperance, Hyttus, Imnribbon. _ Wairn. rapa Two-year-old Stakes.—Birkie. Jackaroo, Canyon, Kildee. Moya La Palme, Going Un, Fortuneteller, Wake, Insurrection, Hacefnlj Tigrinia; Vivation, liievse, Mariekura, Kuia, Maritza. In reference to circulars issued by the New Zealand Jockeys' Association, the Neiv Zealand Racing Conference has asked all club?, owners, trainers, and iockeys to take no action until after the next, meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference in July—Press Assn.
