MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING.
The monthly meeting ( of the Makara County Council' was held yesterday morning, there being present Councillors h. Brvant (chairman), E. Windley, D. Pios seiyL. D. Nairn, AV. E. Cook,'and S. Bowler. ' ~, „ , It. was decided to accept the offer of W. Wakefield to collect the dox tax at 6d. a head. A deputation from the Johnsonville School Committee, consisting of Messrs.P O'Neill, F. H. Putter, G, Hoddn, S. O. Kenny and the ltcv. Isaacson, waited on the council with reference to tho. transfer to the school committee ot Urn road reserve at Hawtrey. It was resolved that the "council could not agree to the transfer of the land unconditionally, but was prepared to grant a lease for a period of ten years at a yearly rental of XI. The chairman moved: "That, for the purposes of adjusting the, representation in the council, the county be divided into five ridings; .that the Makara riding retjiin its boundaries and representation; that the Porirua riding be subdivided into four separate ridings; and that the representation bo adjusted so that tho representation of the several ridings shall be proportioned to the rateable value and liumlwrs of electors respectively, and in such manner that the representation in tho council shall not be more than seven councillors."
The motion lapsed for want of a seconder.
. After a heated discussion between Councillors Prosser and Windley, nnd after a motion tluit the roadmen's wages he increased to 14s. n day hud been defeated, it was resolved that the increase he Is. n day to all permanent hands, except the foreman.
