QUEENSLAND'S LIEUTENANTGOVERNOR
~ ! RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE AP- : 1 POINTMENT. ■ ~j (Rec. March 5.5 p.m.) ; j • London, March 9. Interviewed regarding Mr. Lennon's i nnuointment as LieutenantrGovernor of \ j Queensland, Colonel Amery said lie ac- j cented the whole responsibility for tho ! anoointment. which was made during i Lord Milner's absence in Egypt. The i appointment, of course, was mauo on the ! advice of tlie Governor, whose recommendation in a uifttter of this kind would naturally carry great weight. In reply to a ouestion as to an apparent inconsistency with the- precedent pf West Australia in, IS9I, when the Colonial Office cancelled the appointment of Mr. Lee Steere. Colonel Amery stated that he considered the present circumstances did not - justify similar r.ction regarding nominations to the Legislative Council, he explained that that-.was a matter of domestic policy, in .which the secretary of State could not interfere with tlie Governor's discretion,-unless tlvore were very special circumstances which made intervention necessary.—Aus.-N.Z.
