MARTIAL LAW IN INDIA
HUNTER COMMISSION'S REPORT NEARLY READY. Allahabad, March 9. It is understood that the report of the Commission of Inquiry under General Hunter ns to the recent administration of martial law in the disaffected regions in India is nearly ready, and will probablv ho published simultaneously in England and India at the end of March. It is rumoured that the report will declare that mart'al law was justifiable, and was generally humanely administered. There were conspicuous exceptions where officers acted injudiciously, and vhere martial law was kept in force too long; this was partly duo to the Afghan war. The report is believed not to bo unanimous, and there are said to be differences of opinion as to General Dyer's action at Amritzar. Some members condemned him. Others mantninod that he only acted as any soldier would have done. General Hunter will leave for England in the middle of •March.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
