"'coming of MS; renown; ..■.■ NAVAL CLUB PROPOSED A committee (meeting of tho Wellington Branch .of the Navy League was held yesterday] afternoon. Mr. Robert Darroch' .(secretary) announced-■ that Colonel G. F. C. Campbell' (chairman), was out of town,'and unwell. He suggested that a permanent - -vice-chairman' should 'be appointed so that they would always have a chairman present. -Mr. Arthur .Hollis was appointed chairman for the meeting. On the proposal of Mr. Hollis, Colonel. 'A. F. Roberts was appointed to the position of vice-chairman. ■• The secretary said ho had written'to the' Minister of Infernal Affairs suggest--ing that tho leapo' should he officially, connected' with the torir of the Prince of Wales and tho visit of H.M.S. Renown, and stating that the league was ready and. willing to do anything in that connection. The reply "was to the effect that, the loaguVs welcome should take' the form of an address. . A letter was put in by the Ladies' Auxiliary, stating that it had passed the following' resolution:—"That tho president, lion, secretary, .Mrs. Earlc, and Miss Laurcnson be deputed to attend tho meeting to be called by H's Worship the Mayor, and'on behalf of thc^committeo;: make the offer to undertake" to run a drib for the sailors : of H.M.S. Renown in a shed to be granted by the Harbour Board, or other suitable building; on the Fame lines as that run for 'Bailors' of H.M.S. New Zealand,, and in the event of no dancing being possible in the shed, will do their best to find a hall, assuming the Town Hall (where the previous club was established) to he unavailable. The letter also stated that' Mrs. Luke had assured them that the club would be financed from the funds in hand from the citizens of Wellington. Mrs. Darling said that they' would have representation on the Reception Committee, but on inquiry she was told that that committee had, not yet been apnointed. The chairman said that as far as he could'see they had no official position in connection with, the' visit of the Prince. He thought that their job was to look after the men of the Renown. The ladies agreed with'that view,' and only wished permission to go ahead with the preparations. ' Mrs. Darling mentioned that it was desired to give a dance to tho officers of. the Renown on the night after the civic ball, so that they, could have the advantage of the decorations. Mrs. Earle said it was also proposed to have a tennis.tournament for the,officers of the Renown. It was stated by one member.that it was rumoured that the warship lyas fohig to remain in Auckland after:the 'mice's arrival, and was not coming', to' Wellington until it was time for her'to take the Prince away. The chairman said that the Minister had advised them to present au address to the Prince. He was of the .opinion that if the Prince whs to receive all the addresses, promised he would not be able to take them all away .with him. He did'not think they could do anything as a body regarding the Prince; that could be left to them as individuals. . Captain Chudley, Colonel A. F. Ro. bertß, and Mrs. Darling were appointed k committee to inquire as to the movements of tho Renown, and what measures could be taken to entertain the officers and men. ■-: ■> ■-'•-. The following were elected to/the'Edncation Committee:—Mesdnmes'' :.T. Giblions, Bradney Williams, Capt. Chudley,' Messrs. W. Poster,. A. Hollis,' B. H. Underwood, and two ladies to bp noriiinated by the Ladies' Auxiliary. The'Firiance Committee was elected as' follows,:— Messrs. A. W. Hunt..lan''Duncan, A. Wircn, and A. F. Roberts. ... .- The Ladies' Auxiliary;- reported that it had voted iofl-to the Women's National Reserve for use on the graves:of wldiers and sailors at the; Itardri 'cenip'-' tery, : 'find 'also"recommended' the branch to have quarterly meetings, Mrs. Darlirig' said" that "there "was always any: amount of business for the committees, but there was not sufficient interest for. .the. ordinary members.'.'The proposal was to have short/interesting talks on naval hia'tters during the course of a social evening. She moved that they should hold quarterly meetings-on tho lines niyposed. -This was carried. Captain Chudley was appointed convener of the committee to oriran-'se. the meetings'.-.
