A CROWDED SCHOOL
SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPPLANTS MARQUEES. Marquees an classrooms havo been tried out at Clyde Quay School, and found wanting. If perfect weather could be depended on the expedient that was emoloved to relieve the crowded classrooms would, have been quite successful, but it rains, and blows also, in Wellimrton. and thon even a big marquee is not a very safe and comfortable habitation. There have been some nnnleasant davs lately, and Mr. W. Foster (headmaster) has been forced to admit that the tonts do not answer very well. Two of his teachers, who conducted classes in the marquees, contracted violent colds, which kept them away, and the attendance of the children themselves was not so good after a few days of tent school life. Yesterday morning Mr. Foster was informed that tho Congregational Schoolroom, in Lorno Street, was available as a temoornrv relief. This building is a fine, substantial one, with plenty of air snace. and took tho 100 children of the Fourth Standard quite easily in tho afternoon. The only proviso was that school deslcs/were not to ]>e used, but the' children were to use the ordinary forms. This almost pens the class down to oral lessons, as without desks little writing or figuring can bo done. To net over this difficulty Mr. Foster secured a quantity of stout strawboard, which he had cut up into squares, so Hint tho scholars could work away at arithmetic and take, notes on their knees. The nlaveronnd problem for these children was not. a difficult Tho Kent: Terrace reservo in the vicinity was commandeered, tho boys being instructed to plav north of tho Lorno Street intersection: and the eivU south of it. wjiich arrangement worked perfectly during tho afternoon. The headmaster warned the scholars to take great care of tho Sunday School proncrty, and to remember that, the Kent Terrace reserve was tho property of the city, and not to be destroyed.
