HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER

WAIRARAPA SCHEME. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Carterton, March 9. The sub-committee of the Wairarapa Hydro-Electric Scheme met at Carterton to-day. Mr. J. C. Cooper presided! Mr. H. F, Toogood (engineer) wrote stating that the petition was now in order, and that lie had made arrangements to go ahead with the investigation of the Waiohine. The chairman reported that the investigation of the Waiohine had unfortunately been delayed through the illhealth of Air. Toogood. In company with Mr. T. V. Moore, he had interviewed Mr. Birks (clref electrical engineer) and Mr. Holmes (of the Public Works Department). It would probably be five years V-ofore any supply would be available from the Mangahao scheme. The Ma•ngahao scheme was being pushed ahead, but the wages rate of 12s. a day was not offering much inducement to labour. It Appeared that tho Wairarapa would have to get busy wtth its own scheme, and ; Messrs. Birks and Holmes had promised 'their 00-oporation, Mr, Cooper stated that he had delayed his visit to England until May, as he wanted to get the report placed, before the ratepayers, and the loan raised. He had no „doubt about the report being favourable. It was resolved that the local bodies be asked to have their nominations ready for the board, in view of the early gazetting of the petition, and that the Department be ask*d to fix the election «s won after the Gazette notice as possible, in. order to avoid unnecessary delay. It was mentioned that'in all probability' no election would be necessary, It was further resolved _ to ask the engineer to prepare an estimate of the annual fillirig-up caused by silt, and the cost of survev of a site for a second dam. The latter, it was considered, would not be- necessary for about ten years.
