Unrclay, Curie and Co., of tho Clyde, recc-nty launched a new vessel for the New Zealand Shipping Company. It has been callcd thq Otaki—and'' this' is the third vosaol owned by that company to be called by this name. .Tho first t ima, of courso, tno sailing ship, which will be well remembered in hew Zealand, and the second wriß the flue steamer 6unk in March, 1917, after her gallant action with the raider Moewo, for which Lieut. A. Dissett Smith, R.N.R., was posthumously awarded the Victoria Oroas. And a. record of this gallant action is duly recorded on an engraved plate displayed in tho saloon of the new Otaki. The wording of the plate is in the following form:— "The original 6tcumer Otaki, built in 1908. Dimensions, 464tt. Cln. 66ft. x ,34ft. Defensive armament, 1 4.7 gun, Waß sunk on March 10, 1917, after prolonged action against the German raider Moewe, mounting 2 -7.5 in. guns, 2 6in. guns, 2 3in. guns, 4 torpwio tubes. The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty consider this a very gallant action, and if the Otaki had had a little more luck Bhe would have sunk the raider against overwhelming odds." The commendation is from a letter addressed by tho Secretary of the Admiralty to tho owners. Tho Otaki is now en route from Liverpool to New Zealand ;ports.

• THE LOST*. KOFUTAI. The' Koputai, which was reported to have foundered at Sydney Jaat week, was employed in harbour work in Otago Harbour for many years. She was an iron p#<ldlo steamer of 168 tons gross register, und was built by T. Win&ate and' Co. at Glasgow in ISVo. She was of'thc following dimensions:—Leugth, 112 ft.. 2in.; breadth, 2'Jit. lin.; and deptji, 9ft. 6in. The Koputai was purchased by Jtessrs. J. and J. J. Daley, of Sydney, in 1916, and after undergoing an extensive overhaul at Port Chalmers sailed from thero oil ' Oetobcr 3, 1916, for Sydney. Since then she has been engaged in towing all classes of vcssols on the Australian coast. On many occasions the Koputai towed Inrge sailing ships from Sydnoy to Newcastle, and iroin Sydney Melbourne and Adelaide. She was looked upon as a most serviceable' tug, and put' up some very creditable performances when towing large vessels to Melbourne. THE ORAM. The N.Z. Shipping Co.'s steamer Orari arrived at Auckland from St. John's on Friday, day.' She wentfrom'London and Avonmouth to St. John's to load, and experienced, severe winter conditions, at the latter port, where the thermometer registered 54 degreos of frost or 22 degrees below' zero. She , left St. John's on January 25, and cleared Panama on February 9. Fine weather was experienced from 6t, John's, and the 'voyage was uneventful. She called at Piteairn Island en route, where everything was reported well. The Orari has over VCOO tons of general cargo, consisting chiefly of paper, motor-care, and iron of different descriptions. A totnl of 20C0 tons will be discharged at Auckland, and the remainder at Wellington, I.yttclton, Tiinaru, Melbourne, and Sydney. SHIPBUILDING.

Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., Belfast, launched, during 1919. thirteen vessels, with n total gross tonnage of 07.656 tons. One, of the largest of these ahipß was the Port Caroline (now at Wellington), for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, for vhich tlie llrm also launched the Port Curtis, both vesßcla of ovor S2CO tons.' Four of tho vessels, the Gogra, Govala, Noivsliera. and Wangaratta, wero for tho British-India Steam Navigation Company. Messrs. Ha.rland and Wolff launched fourteen vessels with a total tonnage of 108,000, antd also curried out a large 1 volume of rcconditioniiii work, including tho White Star liner Olympic, tho first Atlantio liner to ho operated as an. oilburning vessel. It is calculated that thif year will see a rccord tonnage for th» port. .
