The Very -Rev. Dean Hyland, who has been in charge of the Rangiorn Roman Catholic parish for about 20 years, is about to leave on a health trip' to [reland. He will visit Irs old home, and will bo absent from New Zealand lor about a year Mr. li. H. Nolan, formerly of Hawem, but for some years past resident in London, returned to New Zealand by the Atlienic. Unfortunately hs is •somewhat seriously ill, too ill to leave the Atheillo at present, and lie will go on to Auckland with the ship. Mr. Nolan has been throughout the whole period of the war a very act've member iif the .executive of the New Zealand War Contingent Association in London,.and it is the opinion of many returned men who have teen his work for "the boys" that he did more than any other New Zealandcr for our men while they were in London. He was in control of the New Zealand Soldiers' Club in Russell Square, an. inst'tution used in the years of the war by many thousands of; New Zealand soldiprs. "
Mr. T. Har'.e Giles, Concilntion Commissioner at Auckland, was taken ill last week at his office.
Mr. Victor B. Locke, who has been in 'the employ of Messrs. A. and T. Burt at Christehui'ch for the last four years, has been transferred to the Wellington branch of thd firm, to take up the position of head salesman.
Mr. A. E. Sandford, accountant at the Auckland branch of the Union Bank of Australia, has'been promoted to be manager of the Feilding branch.
Mr. 6. M. Silver who has been in charge of the social branch of the Christcliurch Y.M.C.A. since his return to New Zealand last August, has been appointed genei'al secretary of the Palmerston North branch of the Y.M.C.A. Mr.' Silver, who will leave CliTistchurch at the end of this month, will be succeeded by Mr. A. .1. M'Eldownc.v, who lias been doing Y.M.C.A. work at Trentlmni Camp for 60ine time.
Mr. A. Philpott, curator of the Southland Museum, and an entomologist of note, hits been appointed Assistant ftt the Cawthvon Institute, Nelson.
Mr. R. A. Marshall, who. has been in the employ of Mes-rs. Stewart Dawson and Co., Ltd., Wellington, for the past seventeen years, is severing; 'his connection with the firm. On behalf of the firm the manner presented to Mr. Marshall a gold watch, suitably inscribed, and from the members of the staff he received a silver salver.
At a gathering of the employees of Macky, Logan, Caldwell, Ltd., last week, Mr. W. Coleman Ball, who has been connected with the firm for twelve years as'traveller, and latterly as departmental manager, was presented by Mr. C. H. Young, director of the cow-' nnny, on behalf of the staff, with_ a handsome silver tea and coffee service, suitably inscribed. Mr. Ball has resigned to commence business on 'his own account at Carterton.
