FROZEN MEAT TRADE
STATE OF| LONDON MARKETS. A report dntcd January 5 from Messrs. Gilbert Anderson and Co., the well-known colonial meat agents, reaolv<l here by this week's mail, and'should bo of interest to those oiißaged in tho frozen meat trndg. The firm writes:— Since our last report, as anticipated, the public registration of (Jnstomers and butchers' permits to buy imported meat has been' abolished. This naturally has enabled purchasers, both wholesale anil retail, to'seek for s tlio brightest and best meat; with a consequent falling oft in the consumption of heavy, cut mutton. Permits are still required for wholesalers to obtain Home-killed meat, and the .whole trade is unsettled owing to the situation that has arisen, tho trade being under part control with prices etill fixed'at'one price for mutton and lamb. Imported'beef of inferior grades is difficult .to sell, nnd a reduction of tho control price is expected. Importers are now hoping to. receive releases of New Zealand meat, but this.'q\iestion, like many others re distribution,, is still to be settled; The heavy-marketing .of imported muttorf' and lamb,, irrespective .of -requirements, on December 19, -led to the controlled price', being . removed, with the -consequence that heavy mutton was y sold as low as sd. per lb. Since then tho market distribution. has been regulated more in accordance with possible require•roents at maximum prices.
