RAILWAY PICNIC
Tho animal outing of the staff of the hrad and branch offices of the Now Zealand Railways, the first 'since "tho outbreak of tho war, was held at Trentham racecourse in ideal weather. Tho grounds, which had been placed at tho disposal'of the committee by the Racing Club, were in excellent condition, and the pleasant surroundings were greatly appreciated by the 100 persons present. Amongst the guests were the DeputyMayor (Mr, G. Frost),, the Town Clerk (Mr. J..R ;< -Palmer). Mr. James Marchbanks • (chief i engineer.. Wellington Harbour Board), Mr.T. Ronayne (late General Malinger of Railways), Mr. T. A. Peterkin (late locomotive engineer), and'.'olonel Collins (Controller and Auditor-General). In addition to races for 'children, an attractive sports meeting was held, and the presence of several handsome cups .-.resulted, in keen competition among fn■•{rants- from tho various branches. The cup donated for the branch securing the aggregate points was won by tho maintenance branch with 24 points; head office ..being second with ,11 points. - • The individual cup was a t:e between F. Malmanche (head office) a.nd O. Hanwood (maintenance). The cup for the relay teams race also fell to the maintenance representatives (Bond. Hunter, Winter, arid Wnllace). The representatives of the locomotive branch were successful "in- winning the' tug-of-war cup, defeating the head office team after a strenuous and exciting pull. • The various events resulted as iollow: 100 yards, cadets—D.
