PREVENTION OF HOARDING
COMMITTEE TO DISTRIBUTE
STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER
The Government is • taking action to minimise difficulties occuring on account, of shortage, of petral supplies. The following statement on the - subject was, made by.,the. Prime Minister, yesterday :-r "In • consequence . of- the prevailing i shortage of petroleum products through--.out.;'the -Dominion .the Government- has. decided-to .take-control'of.the distribution, and for .--this purpose has set up a Petrol Committee at Wellington to 6upor- ■ vise the' distribution/ throughout' New' .Zealand to.act in . conjunction with the' Board of Trade. • The personnel of the central committee is' as. follows f^Mr. - A. G. Gate (Vacuum Oi.l Company), Mr. W. Preedy (Gollinand C 0.)," Mr, S. A. Longuet' (Paters On' and Co.). <Mr. J. 11Cousins (Garage- Proprietors' Association), Mr, P. ltyan" (G'ranby and: CoNapier). ■' "' v 1 ■ . ■ "'Sub-committees' have been- appointed it Auckland, Christchiirch. -and Dunedin, comprisiriff gentlemen who are'conversant with the industry. These j'com-' mittees will deal with all inquiries. Telativo to' supplies', and in order' to con-' servc benzine, .the needs of essential.users will receive preference. All orders in excess of , five eases'.mnst receive the' sanction .of the Board of Trade's representative'in each centre. Every oil importer will be required to prepare a list of daily supplies and .hand it to the_ Boal'd of Trade's committee. Every distribu-. tor of 100 or more .cases-per week will be required to supply a weekly list to the committee of persons whom he has actually supplied and the Quantity." The Prime Minister 6tated that thepetrol regulations gazetted on July 12, 1918! as to the distribution of petrol were, still in force; and that 'any breach ofthese regulations as to hoarding of supplies or iiiiy attempt- to secure supplies thi'ough other than the committees would Bo dealt with'as a breach of the regulations, , for which'heavy penalties --were, niriyided. : 'The shortage is merely temporary, and the stocks - to arrive -show tliat the" present' rigid distribution will not 'be necessary ■ u few weeks hence.TluSre i's enough petrol available'-at l the present .time to supply essential industries, and there is no need for anxiety on. this account, but economy 1 is essential,' and it is with ii view to ensuring this that the 'present control' of distri- , bution is being instituted.'.
The . benzine shortage' is 'hiltiilg tho Wellington fishing industry vory hard. At Island Bay some'of the launches hnvo not sufficient fuel i'or even a day's work and it is said that there is little hope of an' early improvement in the position. „.
