SPORTS DAY

( A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

Yesterday nftenioon the patients and nuKing'staff at Trentham Military Hospital held a sports meeting on the Wellington Racing Club's course. The meeting mis arranged by the hospital staff and patients, and was in the _ nature of a private function, no invitations being sent - out. Although the weather was dull and overcast the rain kept off, and a ' very enjoyable day was spent. A. largu number attended. By tho courtesy of the Wellington Racing Club/.the people's stand was placed at the disposal of the Sports Committee, and tho races were run in front of it.

Afternoon tea was served by tho Hod Cross and nursing slnff, under Miss MoncTcton. An exhibition was given of goods made by the students in the vocational and recreational workshops at the camp. The work, which was of a very high standard, included shoes, embroider}- work, lcatherwork, tables and other articles.

~. All the races were 1 thoroughly _ enjoyed, but the' tug-of-war and the nail-driving competition aroused special enthusiasm.

Concert and Prlze-givjng,

In the evening a large number of the staff, patients, students from the G.H.Q. School, and friends gathered in the old Y.M.C.A. hut and a very enjoyable entertainment was given. A selection ({by the orchestra—discovered, toy the way,' a short while before the. concert started— opened the proceedings. It N was followed, by a duet by Sister Bero N (violin) and Sister M'Nnb (piano). The«distribution of prizes followed. in calling on Miss Monckton (representative of the Red Cross) to present the prizes, remarked that the success of the day had encouraged the committees to hold similar 6ports meetings in the future, Indeed, an effort was.to he made straight away, and it had been decided to hold a tennis tournament. Miss Monckton then distributed the prizes. Three hearty cheers were givon for Miss Monckton. Corporal Munroe gave a recitation and Sister Adams sang. After a hearty vote of thanks had been carried with cheers for the Women's Red Cross, Mr. and Mrs. White and the caretaker and staff of the racecourse, "God Save the King" was sung.
