FAREWELL ADDRESSES AND PRESENTATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, March 1, " Farewell addresses and presentations to the Governor-General and the Countess o£ Liverpool wore given at a largo gathering of citizens in the City Council Chambers to-day. In acknowledging the gifts, the Gov-ernor-General said that be had raado it a practice to spend three months out of every year in the South Island, and generally he had endeavoured to visit every locality in the Dominion, though ho had been prevented from doing a great deal by the exigencies of the war. If one wislicd to study the interests of the community it was essential that ono should travel into every Dart r.o matter how remote, and come into contact with all sections. New Zealand's wonderful work during the war had impressed him, ami lip was proud, of he- loyalty and un« swerving devotion. He wished to add a persons] word on behalf of Her Excellency and himself, exploring ttieir deepest thanks for tho handsome .presents given them. Tho gifts would be valued highly would at all times briny back memories of 'happy days spent in Christchurch. Tho day was that of St. David. Patron Saint of Wales, the country from which tho heir to the,throne took his title. There was another' David to whom this country could look up lor her ideals. He wished New Zealand every success.in the'future, not forgetting tho rising generation ■ who ■were following in the steps of their forefathers, and doing what was right and best for their King and Empire.
