(Guildford Division, Surrey), who is a visitor to Wellington, will be the guest of honour at the New Zealand Club's luncheon at the Y.M.C.A. to-day. A Press Association message from Duncdin reports the death of Mr. George Joachim, for many years managing- director of the Westport Coal Company.

After seven and a half years .service with the Petoue Borough CounciVMr. W J. Gardner, clerk/last night tendered his resignation, he having accepted tho position of secretary to the Wanganui Harbour Board. In moving that the resignation be accepted and that an illuminated testimonial be presented to Mr, Gardner, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) expressed the deep regret the council felt in losing his services and said that he had •always been capable, courteous, and tactful. Councillor Cox seconded the motion, and eulogised the work done by Mr. Gardner during his connection with the council. Tho motion , was earned unanimously. o

At the conclusion of the day's business on Saturday at, the establishment of Messrs. Charles Hill and bous, Mr. Edwin Howell, for the past 12 years mercery manager and buyer, was presented by Mr. E. J. Hill, on behalf of the firm and the staff, with a gold signet ring for himself- and a brooch fpr Mrs. Howell. Mr. and Mrs. Howell leave for Christchurch early next week lor a short etav there before 'embarking on s.s. Suffolk for England, where they propose to have an extended holiday.
