COST OP GOVERNMENT PURCHASE. 'By Telegraph—Press Association Christchurch, February 29. At the request of Mr. Twen'tyman (chairman of the'Temuka branch of.Hie Now Zealand Farmers' Union) for detail's regarding the wheat bought by the NewZealand Government from Australia, ■ Mr. W. G. M'Dons.ld (Wheat Controller) replied as follows:— "Ecplrinjf" to your letter of the 4th inst. re the cost to the Government of the wheat bought ill Australia, and its cost at Timaru, I have to state that the Government bought the wheat in Australia at »s. 7}d, f.o.b. Williamstown. The cost ex ship at Timaru at present, allowing for 355. freight, is approximately 6s. 7d. The duty is a little less than sixpence, so that if duty were added the cost at Timaru would be approximately 1 7s. Id. The point I made at the conference was that if this wheat were landed at Auckland and sold at 7s. Id., the southern miller could not afford to givo I more than f«. 7d. for New Zealand wlieat nnd compete in the sale of flour with the North Tsland millers."
