A CONVENIENT MEMORY. "My mind ia a.complete blank," was the only explanation a middle-aged waterside worker named Charles William Hobday offered in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr. E. Page, S.M„ in answer to <i charge of stealing a leg of mutton, rained at 6s. 8d„ the property of Barber and Co., butchers. Evijfnco went to show that Plain-clothe; Constable Tricklebank accosted the'accused in Cuba Street and asked him what ho had nnder his coat. The constable investigated, with the Tesult that a leg of mutton was brought to light.' Hobday* Vrho was not sober at tlie time, was unable to say where he had procured the. meat. The accused, who is a single man residing at Ngaio. has a record of four previous convictions for theft. A sentence of 14 days' imprisonment was imposed. •RUNNING. AMUCK. "If you run amuck in a hotel the fact that you ate a boarder wijl not protect you," commented the Magistrate in addressing a young man named George Harris, wlio was separately charged with drunkenness, nssaulting a police constable, and refusing to leave the premises of the Royal Hotel nt tho request of the licensee, P. M. Mills. The accused, it transpired, was a boarder at the hotel, and while under the influence of'drink he took charge of the diningroom on Friday night during tho progress of a meal, chasing several persons nwa.v from the tables and upsetting tho furniture. police /assistance was invoked and while being escorted off tho premises he struck at the arresting constable. For the assault Harris was fined <£5, with the alternative of 14 days' imprisonment, while for refusing to leave the premises a fine of £2, with the option of a week in gaol, was imposed. A nominal fine was inflicted on the charge of drunkenness. OTHER CASES. James Smith Wynees was fined .£2, with cosh 65., on a charge of refusing to quit the' premises of the Royal Oak Hotel when ordered to do so by a barman. Default was fixod at seven days' imprisonment. On a further chargo'of drunkenness, the defendant was fined 55., with ths option of 24 hours' imprisonment. , Mary Moller and Ettie O'Toole were each fined 10s. for drunkenness—their second offence. O'Toole was abo fined 80s. on eacli of two charges relative to breaches of her prohibition order. Default in each instance was fixed at seven days' incarceration. JUVENILE OFFENDERS. At a sitting of the Juvenile Court on Saturday, before 'Mr. E. Pago, S.M., a boy who had stolon a bicycle lielonging to the Rev. Blaithwait. of Island Bay, wns ordered to report to tho l'uvonile probation officer, Mr. J. Dincen, regularly .for a period of twelve months. A similar order was inarle in the case of another boy who had been caught stealing tinned goods from a grocer's shop.
