FORESTRY AND THE CITY RESERVES
Sir,—As there is so great an interest being taken at the present lime in matters appertaining to forestry, the criticism of the City Council's carelessness by so eminent an authority as Sir David Ilutchens is of the mewe vital"importance. After so many years «• valuable service in the forestry profession by Sir David, who is recognised by foresters as a leading authority) the referenco to his report on the Williams Park scheme as a eJiossboard by the corporation gardener is ill-timed and suggests a laok 'ofeknow. lodge of scientific forestry. The corporation have been very fortunate during Ilia present summer in not having the Town 'Belt plantations burnt out. The grass has been left to take its chance, nnd the plantation at the back of the 1 ' Terrace, near tho Kelburn bowlit'g green, was thinned months ago, and tho dead trees left lying about amongst ili« live trees. If Sir David would visit this plantation and see the way the trees have been thinned out, he will be convinced that there has not been even elementary knowledge imparted in the work. The City Council having such large tracts of land such as the Wainui, ICarori, and Khandnllah catchment areas, all. suitable for afforestation, the time is ripe, for a vigorous policy of commercial tree-planting.— 1 am, ctc., CONIFER,
