SENSATION AT WANGANUI RACES

$ FORGED NOTES IN CIRCULATION. By Telegraph-Special Corrwpondent. ' Wanganui, February 28. 1 A sensation was caused in the totalisa- ri tor house at tho Wanganui races to-day tl when it was discovered that forged notes ii on tho Bank of Australasia were being T iesued at the windows,. and these were tl followed by forged notes on tho National Bnnk of New Zealand. Both are splendid imitations, and hnvo evidently been made by a photographic , plant, bond paper being used for tho pur- 11,I 1 , nose. I The Bank of Australasia note is nuni- J; tiered 72274. dated Wellington .Tammy 1, 1917. and is allegedly signed by "T'lios. " A. Tlogg," and countersigned fjy "Wm. °.j A. Mills." The necessary colouring has 1' been painted in by hand. The word 1! . "one" is painted in very light green in- " stead of dark green, and the colouring in l' l the centre of the note is faulty. There is no watermark showing. The note is also a fraction of an inch smaller each ct wav than the genuine noto, and faulty ttl printing is observable from tho fact that it is not"sciuaro on," each margin run- T ning at a slight angle instead of being I' l parallel with the edge of tho paper. Forged notes wero also circulated in to the town, and the matter is being inves- Bi tigated by 'tho police. A<
