NAVAL DEFENCE
STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. Tho announcement made by fho First Lord of the Admiralty and cabled to New Zealand seme days ago, to the effect that action oil Lord Jellicoe's report on naval defence in the Pacific was dependent upon whatever course the Dominions intended following \\Vs referred to the Primo Minister in Auckland on Friday. Mr, Massey said that there was no question that there must be co-operation in tho matter, of naval defence, otherwise wo should be left in exactly the same position as that which existed at the beginning of tho war. The first part of tho system would be apparent with the arrival of th.i enrser Chatham. When that vessel was allotted to the Dominion, it was not with any view to the carrying out of Lord Jellieoo's recommendations, but it so happened that her allotment would fit in exactly with any schema of naval defence. He expected that ho would have a statement to make on tho subject of naval defence in the course of 6onie weeks, a statement which ho expected would be of great interest en# importance.
