CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKETS
By Telegmph—Press AmoeUtlon. Christchurch, February 27. Activity in produce lines has been affected to some extent by the wet weather, which has held up thrashing. Al"gfrian onts arc still in'demand and recent quotations are fully maintained, euppiies being insufficient to .meet i;e- . quirements which continue steadily from the north. Gortons are showing httlo activity, growers being disinclined to accept prices which are fully a shilling a bushel lower than what is offering for Algerians. Most of the deliveries of Gartons have been of A grade, and the proportion of B grade will be unusually small this season. There having been a (good deal of activity in tho barley market during the week, prices show a firming tendency. For some time salesl ot big lines, averaging from 5000 to SOW bushels, have b»en recorded on trucks at country stations at figures ranging from Bs. (id. to 95.. an .occasional .line bringing 9s. 3d. This, however, is _a peak price. The market generally is fluctuating, but the indications are at present it will remain firm, as a reduced area was sown this season. Onions ar» worth J® at country stations. Present indications are that potatoes will be in weaker demand when the main crop comes in. The present Wellington prices suggest that there will be little margin there for southern operations. Usual j at this time of the year a good deal ol forward business has been dono with Wellington, but such has been practically nil so far this year. Any forwaro business done has been on the basis ot .£5 to £5 ss. per ton at wayside stations for April-May delivery.
