END OF THE WAR
THE OFFICIAL DAS?H
A cablegram received by the Government from the Imperial authorities states that January 10, 1920, is to bo the official dato of the termination of the war with Germany.
This official date is governed, as far as New Zealand is concerned, by the War Legislation and Statute Law Amendment Act, 1918, which states; "The war shall bo deemed to extend until a date to bo named as the dato of the termination of tho war in a proclamation by the Gover-nor-General published Gazette. ... The date to bo named in such proclamation as the dato of the termination of tho war shall bo tho date of such termination for the purposes of every such Act, and tho war shall for such purposes be deemed to continue until such dato." „ Some New Zealand legislation as well as various private contracts depend upon tho duration of tho war, and the fixing of a retrospective date docs not seem to havo been contemplated. Tho Gazette notice required to mako the date effective in New Zealand has not yet been issued.
