ATHLETIC MEETING
JIG CROWD ON BASIN RESERVE
SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES
WELLINGTON WINS M'VILLY SHIELO
Tho bier revival in amateur athletics in Wellington that has set in now that the war is a matter of history was typified on Saturday afternoon by tho success which attended the Wellington provincial championship meeting and M'Villv Shield competition. The meeting was hold on the Basin Jieserve, on .which a crowd of approximately 4090 had gathered, including the Acting-Mayor (Mr. G. ProsO and Lieutenant-Colonel Mitchell, M.P. Tho gate takings totalled about .£l4O. The weather was threatening at tho outset, but it held fine, through the afternoon. The tracks wore in excellent order. The entries were emin<ently satisfactory, both in point .of numbers and quality, and a gratifying feature was the fact'that they were, truly r^prc : (Mutative of the province. Masterton sent a crack team, including Wyeth, who is regarded as a coming' champion distance runner of no mean order, but at tho last moment G. Harvey, the pole--vault champion, acting' on medical advice, had to remain behind. Competi-' tors came from as far north as AVan'ganui. vet Pctone and Lowor Hutt were practically unrepresented. Several events for Senior Cadets were included in the programme, and in one of these alone there v/ore about 120 competitors. Such keenness on the part of the younger school of runners must, be regarded as very satisfactory. Tho lads wero in charge of Lieutenant T.. JR. U. Petrie. and one of their , uumlwr,. R. Davis, steal out head and shoulders above the .-.tbers as a runner of exceptional promise IT. E. Wilson, champion ihurdler of New Zealand, who is, perhaps, at present regarded as the only "certainty" for the Olvmpic Games, so far as the Dominion is concerned, suor.e, as usual, to advantage. Ho had no difficulty- in,capturing the 120vds. Hurdles, winning his neat in l(i 2-oscc.. and the iinnl in the exceedingly smart time of 15 l-, r >seo„ only h fifth of a second over the world's record. His Derformancc. cannot, however, be officially recognised as the track has a 2ft. 3in. drop in it, and, he had a southerly breeze in his frtvour. ' ~, The distance events ...wcrp . productive of keen competition, and on tho afternoon's showing tho palm for distance running no longer belongs to. Wellington proper. The half-mile went to F. Nesdnlc. a' AVangamii boy, who outraced a formidable field, including AV-. J-. Burk audit. I. Bell. The mile was won by Trov, the local competitor, but the other two i>laced men were visiters, while the three mile was carircd off by A. Wyeth, a Wairarapa representative, with consummate ease. It is also significant that both'the 220vds. and 4-lOyds. flat events were won by Candy, another Wairarapa representative, while. B. Lozell, of AVniraraPd. annexed tho high jump, in tho face of strong opposition. Tho M'Villv shield went to the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club with G2 points, next; in order of "inH ; it,: being: Wairarapa. 37 points; Victoria Wiiiversitv 25: Athletic Football. Sports; Club, 13: Wauganui, 7; and Brooklyn Harriers,. I point. At the conclusion of the afternoon's sport, Mr. It. W. M'Villy. Ipvesi- | dent of the Wellington Centre, handed the shield to. Mr. A.. A. Marvyatt, .who accepted it on behalf.;.of. the.Wellington club. -Mr. M'Villy.mentioned that tho club had won the shield i.for the fourth time. Three cheers were accorded the winners. Mr. Marryiltt expressed' thehone that if- the .club.'did. .not wrfrthe /shield next year it- would be annexed by their friends from' Wairarapa, .who made the trip to Wellington so often, and had competed that day with such, signal success.
