MASTERTON SHOW
RECORD ENTRIES THE PRIZE LIST By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Masterton, February 17. The 33rd show of the Jlasterton A. ami ?. Association opened in the new. grounds at Solwav to-day in perfect weather. All the sheep and cattle were judged under cover. Arrangements were carried out without a hitch. The imhes did their work expeditiously, and tiie t'me-table was strictly observed. Tho attendance was not so large as might -have been expected, but. doubtless the grounds will bo iilled'for the people's day to-morrow, when a holiday will be o'bscrved throughout the district. The exhibit'on is the most successful ever held by the association. The entries make a iword, numbering 2273, as compared with 1509 last year. Tho principal increases are in horses, cattle, and tsheep. The light horse classcs brought out keen competition, tnid on the whole were of a high order, quite a number of new competitors talcing part. Tho purebred cattle were all excellent, and included competition from most of the sheds of well known breeders. The fat cattle were as good as anything shown in the Dominion, and would be hard to beat. The sheep on the whole were iihijli superior to last year's entries. Hoiuneys naturally predominated. Southdowns were a small lint very select •section, and the South-Island judge who officiated paid Mr. J. Knight, of tTield'ng, tho compliment of immediately purchasing a couple of rams to which he had awarded prizes, at 50 guineas each. This speaks for itself when it i» remembered that' Canterbury is virtually the home of the Down breeds. I.incolns were also a good section, but English Leicesters were weak, and no Border Leicesters caiuo forward. The freezing sheep would hold tlieir own anywhere, and tho same applies to the butchers' sorts. Working draughts were the best lot seen at any show in the North Island south cf Auek-
land, but the breeding classes, and-espe-cially tilt juvenile section, were decidedly weak. Some interesting competitions were got off during tho day. Tho principal event was tho open hunters' competition, won by Hassall's consistent performer Micky Free, who fcnccd in his usu.il r™ni"uli=hpil stylo. Following is the prize list: — Purebred Sheep.
