THREATS OF STRIKE EVERT WHERE.
Cape Town, February 12. South Africa is in the throes of a political, industrial and commercial upheaval. Merchants have been, hard hit by banking restrictions and the exchange chaos. From every quarter there are threats of strikes for higher vases and lietter conditions. The jMiittonalist:,, tlio general election campaign, are assiduously preaching Republicanism, while Socialist's and Bolsheviks are endeavourinu to stir up.unrest anions the natnes. The mining industry has a. prosperous outlook with gold at its present level, but it is crippled by strikes. _ Cost-ot-living demonstrations are takpg place overvwherc throughout the Union, and tho 'Government is being strongly urged to act before tho situation becomes desperate.— Aus.-N.Z.
