Ideal weather favoured tho concluding staee of tho amateur athletic champion-, ship meeting yesterday, Friday's rain giving place to a bright, crisp d;ty. The track's were in perfect condition. Tho keenness of last week's competitions and the evenness of tho contest between New Zealand and New South Wales excited tense interest. To-dnv's events brought tosether a record crowd.
As anticipated, New Zealand's champion hiuunor-thrower M'Holm easily out. distanced the local talent, beating Munro, thfl Dominion's wonderful shot-putter, by 14ft. 2in. Lindsay, who had already beaten the great Englishman, Apjilegarth, over 220 yards, had to content himself with third place behind tho N?w South Wales fliers, Hunt and Leadley. The manner in which Hunt shaped ill tho 100 vards and 220 yards causcd his name to bo seriously considered in connection with tho Olympic Games. Dormer made a good showing in the 880 yards, being narrowly beaten by tho New South Wales representative Piggott, who usually shines over tho last stages of half a mile, whereas Dormer appears to havo lost, at tho finish. Wilson, New Zealand's champion 120 yards hurdler,, wns beaten out of a place in tho 4-10' vards hurdles, Edmunds securing tho eve;it for Victoria by defeating the New South Wnlos competitor by three yards. New South Wales occupied tho three places in tho mile walk. Parker re-, peated the victory obtained last week in t.ho three miles walk, easily downing Austin bv sixty yards. New Zealand was not represented in tho running high lump and tho three miles run, tho former going to Victoria, 11. W. Harbison.' topping sft. Bin., against sft. sin. by two New South Wales competitors. New South Wales again supplied tho leaders in the three miles run, Grandemangs scoring easily.
