WATERSIDERS "STOP-WORKS"
Sir,—Tho thanks of Die public are duo to the Wolfaro League for calling attcnlion to the fact that the community is interested directly in the present conference, between shipowners, Harbour Board, and waterside workers. .Hut it is not a question of scale of wages only. The community is concerned in concessions regarding; monthly stop-work meetings, stop-work funerals, and similar nonsensical demands which shipowners and Harbour Board have foolishly conceded during tho past year. These constant "stop-works" interfere with tho general business, nnd in their way prevent tho carrying on of trade and add to the cost of living. I submit that in the interests of the general public the shipowners and Harbour Board should be firm in refusing to renew such concessions. Will the Welfare League kindly see to this point also?—I am, etc., MERGJIVKT. Wellington, February 4.
