FEILDING SHOW
THE SECOND DAY FURTHER PRIZE AWARDS By Tekgr.i'Ph-Specifll Correipondent. Fcilding, February Tito Fcildinff sliou- concluded in dull but line vmitlicr. The atlentlniicc was f not so laryc as the exhibition warranted, and this bears -witness to the fact that tiie fanners in the district do not takea tho same interest in the fixture as in the j years before the war, when entries were ( iienrlv double what they are now and tho i show'attraetcil large crowds. The .(Ton. I ]). 11. Guthrie (Minister of Lauds)) j visited the show during the day and I was entertained by the committee at luncheon. Mr. i. Juiiglit, of Feildinij, made something of a record at the show, takinsr the. championships in Shorthorn u bulls,' in Eomneys, and in Southdowns. iOn, the whole the saddle horses were a good section. Heavy entries were catalogued in the hack classes, lint for some unexplained reason only about half the animals entered came forward in each class, and this robbed the show of a i good deal of competition. Howard I Booth's well-known Lonely, tho hero of ISO many shows and winner of the championship at Christclmrch in 11118, again took the lending honours, performing tho almost impossible feat of taking first in trooj) horses and first in eleven-stono hacks—lwo classes requiring totally difI ferent conditions—while he is fully up j to the top weight. In 13-stone hacks I only four came forward, and the first [ prize was awarded to J. Brace's Royal Star, ft horse showing undoubted breeding, but 100 lightly built for a weightcarrier. N. J. Short's Ivanza, a handsome, well-built cob, mis placed second. His jwsition was. partly due to lack of education. Thirteen-stono hacks were rather a mixed lot. J. Brice's linndj some and well-mannered cob Bill just j beat N. .T. Short's Meteor, principally on maimers. Klevcn-sfone hacks were a I particularly strong class, in which Lonely won. Miss .Toy M'Hardy's Pathfinder, i a beautifully-shaped and stylish animal, i whose only fault is that ho hangs badly j in his stride when trotting, was second, J and had no difficulty in taking the red I ribbon in a really good class of ladies' Shacks, willi J. 11. .Taeob's handsome cob Kaiishaliallimh second. Miss Ji'llardy's . thus secured the 10-guinea challenge ° trophy. Some very good ponies carho forward in the harness class, but there was nothing outstanding in the heavy i horses. All entered in the class for ; ? artillery horses were too big to be serif viceablo for military work of that eharS actcr. The heavy spring-cart horses j were a fairly good lot. Vj> the plough \ tennis, L. T. M'Lcan showed a very fine ipair of mares by Challenger, which would hold their own in any show ring. In the hunting competitions the jumping was for the most part rather rough, J and riders had a tendency to make tho J pace too fast. The maiden competition jj was won by B. I''. Lowe's Cadet, who \ took the obstacles in fine style and was J evidently a good safe conveyance for tho \ hunting field, with J. Doreen's Playboy '. second and I)'. Short's Miro third. Tho ! ladies' hunting competition brought out \ a large field of good horses, and the raan- | ner in which the fair equestriennes linni died their mounts could give men points ond a beating. Tho event, which carried with it 11. J. Booth's challenge, cup, was won by the veteran Micky Free, who, in spite of his years, negotiates obstacles in great style. Mrs. If. Becker's Gale was second, with Ha'/.elwood third. | The hunters' open competition for Mrs. | Perry's cup and E. Short and Son's speI cial priwi of 20 guineas induced a good | entry, and' included most of the best I horses in the district, and several ontj eiders as well. .Most of these horses performed well, but J. Brice's Bill made ! a faultless round, and was easily first, i j Micky Free and Twilight: had to go > ( I again for second place, and the former | ! just won. In the steeplechase compn- . ' tition, some well-known jumpers enter-!] cd, but the exhibition all through was j , | not: ot a high oidtr. .1. brice's enn- : \ stant performer Hailstorm had a fairly I easy win from Huzclwood, with Fill third, all of whom performed creditably, but the others gave a poor exhibition. Pony jumping brought out keen competition and some excellent riding on tho ; part, of youthful equestrian!?, showing i I that they had been taught io use judg- J ment. The manner in which some of ; the ponies were handled was most fav- J oiirnblv commented upon. K. Patterson's c riding' of his little mount, barebacked j easily appropriated J. J. Brycc's dial- '• lcnge cup in the under 11.2 class, but (, was just l>eaten in the under 13.2 class ' c liv Miss Eona Field's Mcrrilegs. In tho |'' driving competition, Miss Iletlio Meads 6 won both events, with Miss Pen-in as * ri'iin»r-np in eacli case. The sheep dog trials aroused a lot of interest, F. J. jj King's Hemp Junior winning, with .T. I P. C.'orrigan's Marvel second, ivhile L. B. p Green's William Boss won a _ special prize for maiden dog. In pigs cnly . Berkshires were shown, and in only one ' caso was G. L. Lowe opposed. This was tiie class for sow over 12 months, ■ in which he was lien ten bv 1-1. 11. Thurston. *■ The quality all through was good. There ' was a larire ond varied entry in Iho home industries class. The Feilding * jeweller'' trnphv in this section was won by Mi=s I. Alabaster, Misses J. Thomson niul Hettie Ilonkinson lieing for second ( place. The N./i. Fanners' Co-op. Distributing Comp'Mij's trophy for cmnpetilor scoring most points in cookery was *' won by Miss 1). M'Donald.
