A £1000 WAGER

EETUEXED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION INTERESTED. After her successful crossing cf the. Tararuii mountain range, Miss Louise Mack notified the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association that, she had won a wager of JJIOOO made by a, well-known Manawatit resident, who wagered that she would not be ablo to perform the feat. , This money sho desired to hand to the association as a memento from an Australasian of the affection that had grown up between the fighting men of Australia mid New Zealand. According to her statement, the terms of the wager were:—"Mr. —■ watered me. .1:1000 to nothing.- that I would' not get across the Taivmiae." There appears to be some hitch in tha mutter, for Miss Mack states that the person wh° made th". wager has shown a desire to break his wager on the ground that lie saw in the papers that Mr. Knox, a guide, had had lo carry her over the ranges. Hiss Mack has informed him that this is untrue and utterly absurd into the bargain. After crossing tho ranges, Miss Mack received a message <f congratulation from the Greytown'Committee of the Mount Hector Tourists' Track on her being the first woman to do tho through trip from Otaki to Greytown." Miss Knox, daughter of thr) guide, accompanied Miss Mack on the arduous trip. Miss Mack's statement that, she accomplished tho trip without being carried is supported by Mr. A. K. Knox, who asserts that Miss Mack walked every step of tho way. Ho denies having carried Miss Mack, stating that this would have been absolutely impossible. At a meeting of the Dominion Bxcciv, tivo of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association tho following resolution was carried on the motion of Messrs. H. W. Scott (Tiniaru) and W. E. Leadley (Christchurch):-"That a letter be written to Miss Mack thanking her for her donation, and advising that 'he N.Z. E.S.A. will be pleased to accept the offer when tho money has been paid to her."
