N.Z. ALLIANCE
FAREWELL TO AYORKERS. A social gathering was held by (lie executive of the New Zealand Alliance, on Monday evening to bid "bon voyage to Mr -V. R- Atkinson, who is leaving this week for England, and to Miss Myra Weymouth, organiser of the Young Women's Lngues, who is leaving in a few days to take part in the campaign now on" for prohibition in Scotland. The Rev. W. J. Cnmrio was in the chilir. Appreciative references were, made to the work and worth of both tho travelling guests by Messrs. R. A. Wri"ht, M.P., W. J. TTelyer, It. G. Penton "if. 11. Cornish, Rev. E. Drake, Mosdnmes W. A. Evans, J. T.. Wright, And Rev. J. Dawson (secretary), to which both guests made suitable replies. Rome of the speakers were reminiscent of the early days of the Wellington Prohibition League, at least three of the founders being present at that meeting. Others were prophetic of the coming end of the liquor traffic. The results of the, last two campaigns were given as evidence Hint the work was based on a broad foundation, and is being built up, in their opinion, on a strong growing enlightened public opinion, which is being moved ns much, if not more, by the "logic than by the rhetoric of the presentation of the case. It was weed that while the continuance and State purchase votes combined were a majority of 3370 over prohibit ion, yet prohibition had a majority of Sfi.Sfll urer continuance, and 237,970 over State iurchase. While it was not claimed that the Stato purchase vole was n prohibition vote, it was contended that it was in fact a vote against continuance, and that this vote, added to prohibition, gave a mnjority of 01,1.12 against Iho continuance' of the liquor traffic in its present form.
