CUSTOMS REVENUE
A RECORD MONTH. Tho Customs revenue for Iho current financial year, as indicated in a statement made yesterday by tho Minister for Customs (Sir W. 11. Hemes), is unprecedentedly large. "The amount of Customs revenue collected during the month of January, 1020, was .£l4l,9o3—the largest »ino>jnt ever collected in one month by the Customs Department," raid tho Minister. The next best month was May, 1919, when tho dutv amounted to .C 437.595, or .£7OOO behind the present month. The amount collected during the ten months of tho financial vear, ,13,840,104, is ; lso a record. The next'highest similar period was the ten months ended January 31, 1917, wlion the amount collected was ,£3,!!31,41!>. which is less than that for the (.resent period by .£003,055. The large amount of levenuc is no doubt due to the prosperity of the 11ominion as well as to tho increased prices of articles, and to tko fact that goods which have teen on order for some lime are now coming to hand."
