RATES 01? EXCHANGE. A meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday. Tlije following statement regarding the American rate of exchango was made to the mooting: "In September last tho Customs Department intimated that nfter November 1 duty would be assessed on American invoices at the rate of exchange ruling at the time the \ cs * eel carrying the goods left the foreign port, instead of at an arbitrary rate of 4.85 dollars. On the basis of a draft presented at thd time this .was show nto mean an increase of 17 per cent, rho date was extended to January 1, and tho ■Minister of Customs later .stated that the alteration would come into force on February 1. The Cuslonis Do however, has changed its decision, and in the New Zealand Gazette of January 23, there appears a notice that duty is to b® assessed at tho nominal rate of 4.8G <lollaAles3rs. A. P. Koberts. W. T. Martin, S. Ivirkcaldie, and W. B. Lees were appointed the chamber's representatives at the conference of the Association, of NewZealand' Chambers of Commerce, to bo' held on March 4 and 5. '
