~ * A WHAKATANE STRIKE DEMAND FOR BIGGER WAGES By Telegraph—Press Association. Whakatane, January 29. A strike occurred yesterday at the East Coast Co-operativo Freezing Company's works at Whakatane. It is understood that the men held a stop-work meeting at 9 a.m., and at 1 p.m. delegates demanded altered conditions, and 3d. an hour increase fori all labour at the works, specifying an immediate reply. The.management took up the attitude that it could not treat with the men while on strike, but stated that if they carried on their work a conference would be arranged at a given time. The men refused this. It is now a case of awaiting for the general secretary of the Freezing Workers' Federation, who is expected here to-morrow.
