ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE
RENEWAL DISCUSSED IN BOTH
COUNTRIES (By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright dice. January 29, S p.m.) London, January 21. Tho Anglo-Japanese Alliance expires in Jnlv, IMI, and its renewal is being discussed, A close understanding with Japan remains an important consideration in British policy, but amendment of Hio Treaty is expected in view of the chanced balance of the world and the existence of the League of Nations. Its renewal is likely to bo postponed until the' League is further advanced.
The Japanese are displaying a lively interest in the renewal. Tin: Government organ "Jiji" declares that although Russia- has collapsed renewal of the Treaty is necessary, owing to possible German designs in the Tar East, but thinks it is not possible that the Treaty should remain the same offensivedefensive alliance a hitherto, owing to tlio League of Nations' Convention. Baron Kate, in an interview, said ho 'was most anxious that the Alliance should continue in some form or other. Baron Shibusnwn said ho was similarly anxious for renewal in such a form as would be compatible with the League of Nations. Count Okuma said that as Russia may easily recover her power, nrolongation of the Alliance would unQuestionably ]>e in the Japanese interest. —United Service. •
