PRICE OF HIDES
CABINET TO SETTLE QUESTION.
The Prime Minister had a conference yesterday with representatives of > those bodies of people who are interested in the price of hides, the purpose of the conference being-fo discover if possible- sonic more satisfactory arrangement than that in force at present for. eoiitroUiiig lb" price of New Zealand leather. The conference occupied most of I'ho day.At the conclusion of the conference Sir. Masscy made a brief statement as to what the outcome had been. "AVo had a long and mtercsting- discussion—certainly the most important and the most complete that we have ever had on Ibis subject," he said. "We heard all sides of the question—the side of the farmers, the side of the freezing companies, the side of the tanners, the side of the boot manufacturers, and Ihe side of the general public as presented by !,lic Board of Trade. I have had all the evidence taken down. I intend to have it typed and possibly printed, and I will get it before Cabinet with a recommendation as to what should be done. 1. did not take a vote at the conference. A vote at such a conference, where representation was not on any defined basis as to numbers of delegates, -would have been absolutely worthless. There are a good many matters in connection with the problem which will liavo to bo considered by Cabinet, I hope to set. the business before Cabinet, in the, course of a day or two."
