MIRAMAR AFFAIRS
The Mayor cf Miramar (Mr. S. M. Stone) presided at tho fortnightly meeting of the Miramar Borough Council held last night, and ,tlhero were present:— Councillors H. K. Robertshaw, B. Collie, J. Hicks, E. J. Barnctt, and Mrs. A. Jl'Vicar. Further leave of absence was granted to Councillor Gardiner, who has been ill for fonie weeks past. A letter was received from the Welling, ton Catholic Education Board asking tho council to waive payment of. tho ,£G due for cartage, of a platform t) Seatoun Park, and for the use of Seatoun Park on Boxing Day. The picnic, was not lield owing to the inclement weather, but the letter stated that the ar.-»-jnt for cartage would bo paid at once. It was decided to reduce the remaining Jlo by £i. i A letter was received from the Hon. ,T. G. W. A ; tken, acting-chairman of Scot? College Board, drawing the attention of the council to tho fact that tho college was exempt from rating on four acres of tho college grouud in the borough. The letter stated that the school was not being run for profit. The application for Exemption from rating was not granted. , A letter from the Westport Citizen's Committee stated that tho Westport district could supply coal should the borough, be short, providing the council was willing to assist in the. development of the coal resources, of the district. The letter pointed out that at a largely-at- . tended public meeting it had been decided to invite momoers of Parliament to visit the district on their trio to Samoa. It was decided to accede to the requests made, and to approach tho nrember for the district. It was decided to take legal proceedings in two cases where rates were in arrears. The bank balance showed a derit of '.£3226 ss. 2d. The report of the Tramway Committee stated that tho Mayor had discussed with the city traffic manager tho proposal to increase tho tramway services, and the committee had agreed to the addition of three extra cars on the Miramar line and four on tho Seatoun lino. It was recommended that tho revised time-table should be adopted and como into force on February 9. The increased car mileage charge' will be £123 10s'. per annum. The report stated that it had been decided to ask the City Council if preference could' be given on borough cars to borough residents on' production of borough tickets.
