Sir Francis Bell left by the midday express yesterdny fpr Dargaville, where he has to attend to some forestry matters and to' other business. He will be absent from Wellington for about a week. Dr. Chesson, Health Officer at Christchurch, is to go to-Samoa as Health Officer. As a preliminary he is to go with tho Parliamentary parly to Samoa on February 1,1. It is understood (says n Press Association telegram from Christchurch) that Dr. Herbert Chesson, District Health Officer for Canterbury, has been "loaned" to the Department of External Affairs, and has been appointed to the charge of all matters pertaining to public health and hospitals in British Samoa. Dr. Chesson will probably take up his new duties about the beginning of May. Regarding the permanent appointment of a district health officer for Canterburv, it is probable that Dr. Hughes, District Health Officer for Otago, will come to tho district. Mr Edward Newman, M.P. (Manawatu), is in town for a few days on public business. Mr. C. P. Skerrett and Miss Skerrett returned from a visit to Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr.' W. H. Morton, City Engineer, was welcomed back to the City Council last evening by tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.), who said that .ill councillors were glad to see Mr. Morton home ngiun. Mr. Morton was at present engaged in preparing a report on His observations abroad wh'oh would no doubt contain much information of value lo tho council and to the city as a whole. Mr. T. Tripe, manager for the Union Company at Lannceslon, arrived from Sydney by the Moeraki. ■ Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldie was a passenger by the Moeraki from Sydney. Mr. John I. Fox, late manager of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Club, who has been on a trip to England, is arriving by the Ruapchu at Auckland to-morrow, and expects to arrive in Wellington by the Main Trunk express on Friday. Mr. Edwin J. Ham, late of the Wellington Gas Company's staff, is to leave on v a trip for England at the end of this month.
