EXTENDING ACTIVITIES
NEW APPOINTMENTS FOR DRS. WYLLIE AND WATT
Tho creation of two now positions in tlio head office of tho Public Health Department, namely, that of inspector of hospitals and that of assistant chief health officer was announced yesterday. The position of inspector of hospitals has lwm allocated to Colonel (Dr.) Wyllie, C.M.G.. C.8.E., at present principal medical officer, Trenthnui . Camp, and that of assistant chief health officer will Jic filled bv Dr. M. H. Watt, at present district health officer, Wellington.
'The duties of Dr. Wyllie with the Department will- be to relievo the Inspec-tor-General and his deputy of the general inspection of hospitals from the clinical side, and to advise upon the clinical asuect of the Department's activities in all branches of medicine other than tho prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. The other appointment is intended to strengthen the public, health sido of tho Department's administration. When the legislative, power is available it is proposed, to avoid confusion, to alter the titles of the chief health officer fDr. Valintine) and his deputy inspectorgeneral of hospitals (Dr.' Frengley) to Director-General of Public Health and Denutv Director-General of Public Health respectively. .< '„,,,, Dr Wyllie is one of the best known o." the medical men of the" Dominion. Educated at Owen's College, Manchester and Kino's College, London, he had a brilliant academic career, finally graduating' M.8., Ch.B. (Vict. TJniy.) with first-class honours in 1598.' At a later rlato he obtained the additional qualification of F.R.C.S. (Eng.). After graduation he hold tho following appointments: House surgeon, Manchester Koyal Infirmary; clinical assistant, Manchester Cancer Hospital; resident medical officer St. Marv's Hospital for ."Women and Children. Manchester; resident medical officer Manchester Children's Hospital; house surifoon St. Peter's Hospital for Gcuito Urinary Disease, London. Di Wyllie has had considerable-.war experience, having seen active service In both the South African War as civil snrseon attached to tho 8.A.M.C., and in the recent European war. Leaung New Zealand in May, 1315, as major in the Ist Stationary Hospital/ he served with that unit as divisional surgical officer in Esvpt and at Salonika. Ho then assumed command of No. 1 New Zealand General -Hospital at Cairo in May, 191b, and established the hospital at Brockcnhurst. Hampshire. For his valuable seivices ho received his promotion to tho rank of lieutenant-colonel, was mentioned twice in dispatches, and was awarded the SV January. 1913, Dr. Wyllie was selected lo oreaniso the Ist Military Orthonaedic Unit for New Zealand and was attached to the staff of the Mditary Orthopaedic Hospital, Haimi—th, or this Purpose until June, 1918. Ho ? returned to New Zealand in August, 19 8, nl since then first he Chalmers Military Hospital at Chnsturch. then tho Military Hospital at Trentham. He has also acted as consultin* surgeon, special military surgery, and was promoted to the rank of colonel and awarded a C.8.1i. Dr Watt is an M.D. of the Uimeisiry of New Zealand. "10 he obtained the travelling medical scholarship of that University. In the following year he ndertnok a course of post-graduate tudvin English hospitals, aso passing 1,7 examination for tho diploma ot ME.C.S. (Eng.), L.E.C.P. (Lond.).-
