TRENTHAM RACES

AMYTHAS AGAIN SUCCESSFUL

BINDLE WINS BIG SPRINT EVENT WATERLOO STAKES TO SURVEYOR Wretched weather prevailed for the. final (lav of Uio Wellington Racing Club's meeting at Trenthnm on Saturday. Rain fell practically .ill day, though it lifted for Hie running of Iho big event. The going was very heavy and nt the closo of the day the course was very much cut up. Considering tho weather conditions there was a good attendance, and the public were again rewarded with some high-class racing. For the day the totalisator handled 4!56,5Gl Ms., making 4M,1!8 for tho meeting, as compared with ,£119,100 for tho two-dav meeting last year. »\n innovation, which could easily be followed by other clubs, was brought into operation 'on Saturday. After doing their preliminaries the jockeys were brought back to shelter till the raco was about ready to start.

THE RACING DESCRIBED. Tho opening event saw several scratehingsA Black Hill was a good favourite, bn'l. lie shaped badly and was never near the leaders. Chaeronin jumped out in front and led the whole way. Stumble was in second place most of the way and heat the third horse by a good margin. Black Hill ran past a. few strung-out horses and got fourtli place. Penv.rv Rose was the favourite in tho Alelroso' Welter Handicap. from which Buvrnngong was withdrawn. Hovul Exchange and Demagogue led Lingerie into the straight, where the leaders dropped back and Penury Rose came through, but lie had to do'his best to beat Ermine, who finished well. Lingerie was a neck away and then came Old Gold, Demagogue, ami Royal Exchange. Demand, who had raced consistently throughout the meeting, was the best bucked of tho runners in the Hopeful Stakes. Fortune Teller led Wake and the oihers into tho straight, where li'C fimui'-iic came through and, acting well in the mud. ho won bv a neck _ from Fortune Teller. Wcldone was third, a head in front nf Ceimesia. Surveyor was the best backed of the four ninners in the Waterloo Stakes, but Right and Left had over a thousand supporters. Caricature led into the straight from Right and Left, but over the last two furlongs the favourito joined the latter and tho pair left the field. In a great finish Surveyor won by a head, with Trespass several lengths away. Gray rode tho winner a masterly race' and took him out wide in tho straight, where the going was a shade better. This won the race for him. Tiio Summer Handicap proved the good thing for Amythas that the handicap was. Borcalis led the field down tho back, but'tho favourite ran up to him at the half-mile and in the straight he came away and won nicely by a couple of lengths from Borcalis. Bagdad, who did not get a good run, finished well in third place. Spanner finished last. On tho form of the winner it looks as if ho was unlucky not to be ready for tho Derbies. , ~ ■ r, 1 Slaioha, Hurry Up, and Prince Hat were withdrawn from the Consolation Handicap,- Royal Stag starting a good favourite. Ruse Pink and Impediment led for six furlongs, where Bonnie Staid assumed charge, and in the straight she left (ho field and won very easily from Royal Stag. Punka just beat Paddington Green for third place, and the others were tailed off. Arrowsrfiith, Tigritiya, and Jutland were withdrawn from the City Handicap, Slichaela being installed favourite, while there was also strong support for 80-Peep and Bindle. The favourite got away badlv, and Astinome led into tho course proper. Thru 80-Peep slipped up on the rails, but Bindle and the favourite -soon headed her. Bindle held the favourito in the run homo and won by a neck, with 80-Peep two lengths a'wiiv. Chimera was fourth. Ruddy, Arch Lassie. Early Dawn. Kilgour, and Vindictive were withdrawn from the Kaitoke Handicap, leaving sixteen runners. Jhistard Pot was a hot favourite, and the pool was the biggest of the day. Nursing Sister and Jlymavty were prominent early. At the finish Swaneo'River won by two lengths with Parorangi a. length in front of Kinsem. Philomela was fourth.
